Outdoor Lighting: Outdoor lighting installation includes security lights, wall lights, path and decking lights wired to weatherproof fittings with suitable controls. Cardiff Electrician installs outdoor lighting for homes and businesses using IP-rated fittings, RCD protection and dusk sensors, timers or indoor switches.
Good outdoor lighting makes a property safer and more usable after dark. A well placed security light deters unwanted visitors, path lights stop trips on steps, and soft lighting on a patio or deck lets you use the garden on summer evenings. The trick is getting the light where it is needed without dazzling you or your neighbours.
Jorge talks through what you want to light and why, then suggests fittings, positions and controls. We use outdoor-rated fittings and cable, and wire everything so it can be switched from inside, by sensor or on a timer.
Signs you need outdoor lighting
- Your driveway, side passage or back door is dark at night
- You want security lighting with a motion sensor
- Steps, paths or decking are hard to see after dark
- Existing outdoor lights have failed, corroded or trip in the rain
- You would like to use your patio or garden in the evenings
- Your business premises needs better lighting for staff or customers
What's included
Security and PIR lights
We fit motion-sensing security lights over doors, driveways and side passages, angled to cover the area you need without lighting up the neighbours' bedrooms.
Wall, path and decking lights
We install wall lanterns, bollards, spike lights and recessed decking or step lights, using fittings with the right IP rating for each position.
Controls that suit you
Outdoor lights can run on dusk-to-dawn sensors, timers, motion sensors or a switch inside the house, or a combination, so they come on when you actually want them.
Safe cabling and testing
Cables are routed neatly along walls or buried in armoured cable where needed, with RCD protection, then tested and certified under BS 7671.

Outdoor Lighting FAQs
Mains or low-voltage garden lights?
Both work. Mains-voltage lights suit walls, driveways and security lighting. Low-voltage systems, run through a transformer, are popular for garden borders, paths and decking because the cables are lighter and easier to move. We recommend what suits each area of your garden.
What affects the cost of outdoor lighting?
The number and type of fittings, the distance from the house, whether cables are fixed to walls or buried, how they are controlled and whether a new circuit is needed. A single security light over a back door is a much smaller job than lighting a whole garden.
Can I control outdoor lights from inside?
Yes. We can wire outdoor lights to a switch inside the house, add a timer or a dusk-to-dawn photocell, or combine a switch with a motion sensor. Many people like a switched patio light plus sensor-controlled security lighting at the front and side.
How do you stop security lights annoying the neighbours?
Positioning and aiming matter. We angle fittings down onto the area you want lit, set the sensor range and timer sensibly and avoid lighting straight into neighbouring windows. It makes the light more effective as well as more neighbourly.
Do you install outdoor lighting for businesses?
Yes. We fit outdoor lighting for shops, offices and commercial units across Cardiff and South Wales, including car park, entrance and security lighting. Commercial work is planned around your opening hours so disruption is kept to a minimum.

I had a number of small electrical jobs for Jorge to do. He completed everything quickly, professionally and to a high standard. Jorge was very polite and helpful and clearly takes pride in his work. I would 100% call him if I need more electrical work doing.
I have been a private landlord 25 years and can count the reviews I've left on one hand. I've known Jorge several years. He is a trusted professional, timely and charges competitive rates.
We initially asked Jorge to help us after being let down by another electrician, and he was only too happy to help make some bad work safe... Jorge always explains what is going on and helps us understand more about how electrics work. He is thorough, leaves no mess behind and very reliable.
