Bathroom Electrics: Bathroom electrics covers lighting, extractor fans, shaver sockets, heated towel rails, underfloor heating and electric showers in a room where water and electricity meet. Cardiff Electrician installs bathroom electrics following the BS 7671 zone rules, with the right IP ratings and RCD protection.

Bathrooms carry a higher risk than any other room in the house, which is why BS 7671 divides them into zones around the bath and shower. Each zone sets which fittings can go where and the level of water protection they need. Getting it wrong is dangerous and often means pulling a new bathroom apart again.

Jorge works with you, and your bathroom fitter if you have one, so cables are in place before tiling starts. We plan lighting, fan, towel rail, shaver point and any shower or underfloor heating together, then come back to fit and test everything once the room is finished.

Signs you need bathroom electrics

  • You are planning a new bathroom or en suite
  • You want downlights, mirror lights or LED strips
  • You want an electric towel rail or underfloor heating
  • Your bathroom has no extractor fan, or it has stopped working
  • There is an ordinary socket or light switch inside the bathroom
  • Your bathroom lights or fan trip the RCD

What's included

Zoned lighting

We fit downlights, mirror lights and LED strips with the IP rating each zone requires, including low-voltage options where fittings must sit close to the bath or shower.

Fans and towel rails

We wire extractor fans with timers or humidity sensors, and electric or dual-fuel heated towel rails, with switching and isolation outside the zones.

Shaver points and showers

We install shaver sockets designed for bathrooms and, where needed, a dedicated electric shower circuit with the correct cable size and isolation switch.

First fix, second fix and testing

We run cables before tiling, return to fit accessories at the end, then test everything and issue the relevant BS 7671 certificate for the work.

How it works

Plan with your fitter

We agree the layout of lights, fan, towel rail and shower with you and your bathroom fitter.

First fix

Second fix and certificate

We fit and connect everything after tiling, test it and issue a certificate.

Bathroom Electrics FAQs

What are bathroom zones?

BS 7671 divides a bathroom into zones based on distance from the bath or shower. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower tray, zone 1 is directly above it and zone 2 extends a set distance around it. Each zone limits which electrical equipment can be installed and the water protection it needs.

Can I have a normal socket in my bathroom?

Standard sockets are allowed in a bathroom only if they are at least three metres from the edge of zone 1, which rules them out in most UK bathrooms. Shaver sockets made for bathrooms can be fitted closer. We advise on the best option for your layout.

When should the electrician come in during a refit?

Twice. First fix happens after the old bathroom is stripped out and before plastering and tiling, so cables can be buried in the walls. Second fix happens once tiling is finished, when we fit and connect lights, the fan, towel rail and shower. Good timing avoids damaging new tiles.

What affects the cost of bathroom electrics?

The number of lights and fittings, whether a new shower circuit or underfloor heating is needed, access to the room from the loft or the floor above, and how the work fits with your bathroom fitter's schedule. A simple fan and light swap is very different from a full refit.

Do you work for landlords on bathroom refits?

Yes. Landlords and developers in Cardiff and South Wales use us for bathroom refits in rented homes and flats, often coordinating with their own fitters. We provide certification for all new electrical work, which is useful to keep with your property records.
