Where is emergency lighting required?
It is generally needed in non-domestic premises and in the shared parts of some residential buildings, such as HMOs and blocks of flats. The building's fire risk assessment decides exactly where. Typical locations include escape routes, stairs, exit doors, changes of direction and near fire alarm call points.
What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained?
Non-maintained fittings stay off normally and only light when the mains supply fails. Maintained fittings are lit all the time and keep working during a power cut, which suits exit signs and places like cinemas or bars. We recommend the right type for each position in your building.
Who is responsible for testing emergency lighting?
The responsible person for the premises, usually the owner, employer or managing agent, is responsible for routine checks. BS 5266 recommends a short functional test each month and a full duration test each year, with results recorded in a log book. The test key switches we fit make the monthly check straightforward.
What affects the cost?
