Light Fitting Installations: Light fitting installation covers replacing or adding pendants, chandeliers, downlights, wall lights and dimmer switches. Cardiff Electrician fits lights securely, checks the existing circuit is suitable, including earthing, and uses fire-rated or IP-rated fittings where the location needs them.
Changing a light fitting looks simple until the old ceiling rose has no earth, the new chandelier weighs far more than the plastic box can hold, or the LED bulbs flicker on the old dimmer. Those are the jobs we get called to fix across Cardiff after someone else has had a go.
Jorge checks the existing wiring and fixing before fitting anything. Heavy fittings are secured to the joists, downlights are fire-rated where the ceiling needs it, dimmers are matched to LED loads and older circuits without an earth are identified so the right type of fitting is chosen. You end up with lighting that looks right and works properly.
Signs you need light fitting
- You have bought new light fittings and need them fitted
- LED bulbs flicker or buzz on your existing dimmer switch
- You want downlights or spotlights in a kitchen or bathroom
- A heavy chandelier or feature pendant needs secure fixing
- Old fittings are discoloured, brittle or have scorch marks
- You want wall lights or extra lights added to a room
What's included
Pendants and chandeliers
We fit new pendants and heavy feature lights, adding a proper fixing to the ceiling joists where needed so the weight is supported safely, not left hanging on the ceiling rose.
Downlights and spotlights
We install recessed downlights, using fire-rated fittings where the ceiling below a room or loft needs it, and IP-rated fittings in bathrooms and other damp locations.
Dimmers and LED upgrades
We match dimmer switches to the lighting load, which stops the flicker and buzz that comes from fitting LED lamps onto an old dimmer designed for filament bulbs.
Circuit checks and testing
We check the lighting circuit, including earthing, before fitting, then test the work and issue a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate where new wiring is added.

Light Fitting Installations FAQs
Can you fit lights I have bought myself?
Yes. Many customers buy their own fittings, and we are happy to fit them. Send us photos or links before the visit so we can check the weight, fixing method and whether the fitting needs an earth, which matters on older lighting circuits that were installed without one.
What affects the cost of fitting lights?
The number and type of fittings, ceiling height, whether new wiring or switches are needed, access from above through a loft or floor, and whether heavy fittings need extra support. Swapping a pendant for another on the same point is quicker than adding new downlights across a ceiling.
Why do my LED lights flicker?
The most common cause is an old dimmer switch designed for traditional bulbs, which does not work well with low LED loads. Mismatched or poor quality lamps and loose connections can also cause it. Fitting a dimmer rated for LED loads, with dimmable lamps, usually solves the problem.
Do downlights need to be fire-rated?
Cutting holes in a ceiling can weaken its fire resistance, particularly between floors in houses and flats. Fire-rated downlights help restore that protection. We use them where the ceiling needs it and IP-rated downlights in bathrooms, near showers and in other damp areas.
Do you fit lighting in rented and commercial properties?
Yes. Landlords and businesses in Cardiff use us to replace failed or outdated fittings, upgrade to LED and add lighting to communal areas. We can work around tenants or opening hours and provide paperwork for any new wiring work.

I had a number of small electrical jobs for Jorge to do. He completed everything quickly, professionally and to a high standard. Jorge was very polite and helpful and clearly takes pride in his work. I would 100% call him if I need more electrical work doing.
I have been a private landlord 25 years and can count the reviews I've left on one hand. I've known Jorge several years. He is a trusted professional, timely and charges competitive rates.
We initially asked Jorge to help us after being let down by another electrician, and he was only too happy to help make some bad work safe... Jorge always explains what is going on and helps us understand more about how electrics work. He is thorough, leaves no mess behind and very reliable.
